selkie's photostream
|

First off, if you are some idiotic mouthbreather who has either -
a) a favorites stream full of crotch-shots and Hustler-type nudes, don't bother to add me as a contact. It won't be returned, and furthermore you will be blocked. I have no interest in your Kodak digital shots of your girlfriend's ass, or her mouth wrapped around your member.
If all you can see in my photos is the masturbation-potential, then you can get bent...
or;
b) you have no photos at all. You are a voyeur, and give me nothing interesting in return for fav'ing my selfportraits.
With that said -
I am my own muse - although these days that place of "honor" is occasionally shared, influenced at least...
However, back to the cold-hard-facts...
I am a:
Photographer/Dancer-Performance Artist/Poet & All Around Loon…
I am a girl – I take a lot of photographs and write a lot of words, both which i manipulate and generally mess with until they look they way i want. All of my photos are self-portraits unless otherwise specified. All the work here is mine. Anything i’ve modeled for is not shown here, as that would be cheating, innit? As a teenager i began writing angst-ridden and incredibly bad poetry – i like to think over the years, i’ve improved a bit.
I began taking self-portraits to amuse myself after becoming ill in the Spring of 2004.
A few months later, after finally recovering from pneumonia, i had an accident which left me with a lot of time on my hands.
As a result, i now occasionally must wear a backbrace and, when the shit really hits the fan, use a cane - once i was told i may never walk without it (they were wrong, as “they” almost always are…). I was given a camera as a gift, which i used on myself as a way to document my recovery and relieve the stultifying boredom. I turned the lens on myself because there was no one else around, and i was confined to my own apartment for months, with only short physical-therapy walks in the Honolulu University district. Self-portraiture is my first love, and is still the main focus of my work.
To paraphrase Anaiis Nin (and countless others), everything is all material for ones' art.
In other words - it may suck in real life, but on camera it sure looks pretty.
My camera keeps me from indulging in anti-social, murderous and possibly illegal behaviour.
It keeps me sane.
This is what i do.

"Her work has touched me more than any other artist on flickr. Many of her images are imprinted in my mind and I am deeply impacted. I believe that she is one of the great artists of our times. Wow."

"When I stumbled across Selkie's work I was struck by how honest, open and strong this woman is. She gives you 100% and more of her soul and person in her work. I'd love to meet up with her and talk to her for hours about anything and everything as I think she is someone who will really make you think long and hard about everything. Just like her images do. Wonderful."

brendadada says:
"Selkie Coriander feels like my sister, or an intimate friend whom I have known for many years. She says things with pictures that I know and often struggle to say in words. She is teaching me about the importance of autobiography, about my sense of self, about how to inhabit every inch of this skin of mine. The journey is amazing."

"(She may mock me for this, but it's 2 AM, I'm knackered, but the following words won't leave me alone - there must be an element of the writer in me somewhere.)
While there are many varied and gifted people on Flickr, if you were to ask me for one name of a true artist here, it would be Coriander’s. Whatever your reaction to Selke’s photography, that reaction will tend to be significant. The most effective, moving, and poignant art stimulates a part of your mind that you feel has not been fully stimulated before. It can also tell you things about yourself that you weren’t fully aware of, characteristics that sometimes you don’t necessarily like. Coriander’s work has this power. To some degree, I can’t help feeling that she is the chemical element while many of the rest of us are mere hazy compounds. Selke has scared me, amused me, annoyed me, puzzled me, challenged me, inspired me, filled me with hope, nurtured me, made me belly laugh out loud, caused true inner conflict, sometimes on the same bleeden' day. I love her complexity. I love her razored humour and humility. Don’t just casually browse a few images. Immerse yourself and you’ll see what I mean.

"OK, you know what.....I'm not going to leave one of those testimonials lauding Selkie's photography as "raw and vulnerable," or "courageous and erotic." We all know that by now. Yes, she's a beautiful woman. Yes, she's a talent with a camera. She's got a rapier wit, and probably can spout Dostoyevsky like I can ramble off quotes from "The Simpsons."
Quite simply, I like her work. It's sincere and moody and beautiful. And quite frankly, it might inspire me to take a picture of my scrawny ass against a Japanese paper screen with a forlorn look on my face and a caption by Sartre.
Now if THAT isn't the ultimate praise, I don't know what is.
Keep it going, Ana. And never give up."24th January, 2005

"Selkie walks the sword-bridge in bare feet, bleeding art that tastes of both the keen and the bitter. Open your eyes and see what she has to show you."
