I think there's a lot of truth in that although most people tend to get a little nervous when u get up-close with a camera ^^ and as capa was a war-photgraher he maybe meant: being willing to risk.

Seeing "close" as a concept and not as a physical measurement but emotional or rather empathic helps me to have a lot of fun whilst taking photographs.
