I take a lot of photos, usually of landscapes. I don't consider this art; I'm just showing the most beautiful thing I can see in the most beautiful way. I don't try to stick any ideas or emotion into my photos. There are lots of great photographers around who do that, and I like a lot of their work. We all do what we do.

I originally thought I could translate my Midwestern appreciation for subtlety in natural color into photography. I was wrong. My photos of what I alone seem to appreciate are. . .flat and ugly. I have decided to switch gears and focus more on the colors that my camera can see, as opposed to the colors that I can see. Obviously this is not a wonderfully happy compromise. My photos of Maui and Colorado tend to overshadow all my others in my mind; for this reason I'm afraid that it really is the landscape, not the photographer, that creates beauty in landscape photos.

That and this Winter thing keeps happening. It steals the colors from most of the world around me, so I try to compensate between May and September by taking ridiculous photos of leaves and sunsets. In winter I mostly take photos of fog when I can find it, or of "cold" on very cold days.

I am still dreaming of a slitless, astronomy-grade (light-gathering) direct spectroscope attachment for my camera, so I can bring light spectra of everyday objects (paint, the window, lights, my cat) to flickr. I'm gathering lenses and prisms. We'll see how it goes. I have a few photos I made using my pizza box / diffraction grating scope, but it only works with very bright sources. One of these days I might just give up and spring for a new double Amici prism (still haven't found any used ones) and a telescope, and some epoxy to stick my camera on the back. We shall see.

Please check out my videos at youtube: youtube.com/user/wormfighter They are very much an extension of my photos.

I have a great (widely scattered) biological family and a loose network of widely scattered friends.

Please look around and let me know what you think. I like to get to know people who create or appreciate visual images.
