The Fort Walton Beach Library, now housed in a modern 24,000-square-foot building, was first established under humble circumstances in a waterfront Masonic building by the Fort Walton Beach Women’s Club in 1927. Sadly, in 1936, the library was dismantled when a local high school needed the library’s books for an accreditation review.
In 1954, the library was re-established by the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Women’s Club in the community center on land donated by Library Board President Liza (L. M.) Jackson. Lucile Woodward, a member of one of the first families of the city, served as volunteer librarian for two and a half years. Stocked largely with donated materials, the library grew substantially under her direction and in1957, a professional librarian, Dorothy Raymond, was hired. The library was open for full-time service.
