    Alexander Petti says:

" I am constantly surprised when I look at Pensezel's portraits of children.
The instant I see them, I feel I know something of their personalities; how they might laugh, if they're naughty and fiddle with things in her studio, or sit in quiet surprise at the mix of treasure chest and mess that is an artist's sanctuary.
And the reason that is so surprising, beyond the breath-taking talent needed to achieve this, is that that feeling of recognition happens instantly. There is no sense, as often is the case with other portrait artists of children, where you have to battle the thoughts and views the artist has imposed on us, in order to glean something of the sitter.
The character in Pensezel's children is entirely their own.
It reminds me of the way I saw my friends when I was a child - Jurgen's fun if you like playing with cars, but he cries too easily and he won't share his lunch. Koen's my best friend and I love to go exploring with him and we always share everything. Jolie's really brave (even for a girl).
It's surprising to instantly feel you know someone you've never met, 5000 miles away, even more so when you think you're reacting so strongly to what amounts to charcoal rubbed on paper.
It leaves one feeling that years from now, people will look back at Pensezel's work in the same way we might look at Rubens children today - we may find the fashion and hairstyle odd, but will instantly recognise their humanity, and be surprised we feel linked to someone who was alive 400 years ago."
