Artist Statement-
I think of myself as an expressionist painter. When you look at my work do you have an emotional pull? Do you have a gut reaction? Do you look deeper and begin to wonder? Good. To me art is at its best when it causes you to feel something. Color causes an emotional impact. I paint with bold, vibrant colors because they speak directly to our emotions, instantly connecting us with the images. I’ve always been a storyteller at heart. I wonder about the Universe and our place in it. Working with watercolor I’m able to use a technique that allows me to become not just the creator, but a participant in a dialog between myself and the painting, (and perhaps something more).
The technique I use involves putting salt down on wet paint. As it dries, luscious blooms and star effects form. Going back, I contemplate the painting, looking for ideas and images after it has dried. Almost like cloud watching or an ink blot test. Through this method I am able to channel my subconscious and bring forth imagery, archetypes and symbols that I would never “think” to paint otherwise. As a result each painting is personal snapshot of my thoughts and emotions of that given moment. Ultimately my goal is to enable the viewer to connect with their own inner sense of wonder, emotions and perhaps that “something more”.
Bio-
Shoshanna Bauer is a watercolorist who creates vibrantly colored, inspirational, and thought provoking paintings. Her abstract subject matter is spiritual and metaphorical, while her more representational work is often whimsical and fantastic.
In 2005, Shoshanna began utilizing social media networks like Flickr, MySpace and Livejournal. It wasn’t long before she branched out to include Facebook, Twitter and online galleries to market and promote her art all over the world. Locally, Shoshanna has shown at venues such as the Boneyard Arts Festival, Artists Against AIDS, HeartlandArtGallery and Madeline’s Confectionary Arts Studio.
Beginning her college education at Parkland Community College she studied under watercolor artist and now Professor Emeritus, Donald K. Lake. After receiving her Associates Degree in Art and Design, Shoshanna transferred to Eastern Illinois University where she received two consecutive Talented Student Award scholarships and her B.A. in Studio Art. In 2008, Shoshanna was selected to receive Illini Radio Group’s “20 Outstanding Women You Should Know” award. In 2009, she began selling Fine Art Gicleés in addition to her original paintings.
Shoshanna was born in Greeley, Colorado and moved to the university town of Champaign-Urbana when she was eight years old, with her parents and her sister. She has called the twin cities her home ever since and continues to live there with her husband, daughter and four cats.

"I came to know shoshanna's work through flickr when she showed interest in something I had painted, what an honor for someone with her talent to notice me. Her work enthralls me with the brillant colors she masters so well. I don't think I'll ever be in her league but she inspires me to paint."

"The world is full of beauty and citrine sees it all... not only that but she can put it into her painting... sometimes as a delicate wash, sometimes wonderfully rich colours, sometimes as a powerful composition...

"A truly inspirational artist, Shoshanna's work displays movement and grace. There is a clarity in her art that draws the gazer in and shares the imbued emotion on a very visceral level. It's intuitive, it's emotive, it's beautiful. And when you walk away you know that you have seen a piece of her soul - and recognized the mirror of your own."

"Like all of us Shoshanna is on a quest. I love to see her pictures in watercolor because she is so willing to share her pictures as though a visual diary of the journey she is on. Her pictures and her words teach me much about my passion for the medium of watercolor.
Until Shoshanna painted a picture of a corn maiden, I had no idea what she was painting. It certainly didn’t look like a cob of corn or resemble the kind of maidens I see in Glamour magazine.
When I went to the internet to research them, I found a piece of me in those who collected stone ornaments called corn maidens.
You see, I have a thing about smooth stones. Whenever I would go out hiking or kayaking I invariable would bring back at least one small stone flattened by time in fast moving full spring creeks.
I would take them a put them in a jar in my room to remind me of a small piece of creation made by God.
Spend time with Shoshanna's photo stream. Her works remind me of that jar of rocks….. I like to look at them all -- after she’s been out exploring on her quest."15th January, 2007

Holistic Directory says:
"I just love Shoshanna s work. I find it very inspiring. It seems to touch my spirit deeply and simply, no words, just colours and shapes. We are so bombarded with images that I usually do not react that strongly. This says a lot for Shoshanna s artwork and its ability to affect people profoundly.
Thank you"14th January, 2007

"You are my hero(ine) of watercolor art!! I have been doing watercolors since I was really young (I'm about 20 now) and but the past few years I've been in a slump with them... seeing what you can do with color and shape and the messages behind them makes me want to grab the paints and brushes and splash on some color myself! Seeing your pictures of the transition of divorce have also inspired me... I am too young and inexperienced to know what divorce is truely like, but I have been through my versions of break-ups and intense loneliness. Keep painting, and I will keep looking to your work for inspiration!"

"Citrinepoint brings an amazing amount of synchronicity to her art. Not only is her use of color, shading, and composition a treat for the eye--but she seems to know what the viewer most needs to see. Her works speak on an intimate and personal level to everyone who sees it, and it's obvious she invests her heart in each work. Her skill at pulling beauty out of the ethereal universe and molding it on paper for us to see never ceases to amaze me."

Mariah Hawk says:
"Shoshana's art is a personal journey of self discovery. She's created a spark that ignited brilliant light and colors out of darkness and despair. This has led her onto a spiritual path of immense beauty, mystery and an alchemist's touch with her paintbrush. Her work is alive with symbolism. The spirals are especially significant, dancing and weaving like fairies through almost every piece. She is a deep, complex personality still in process (as symbolized by the spirals). Her shadow is coming into balance and harmony with the lightness of her very being, making her a rather interesting person as well as a wonderful artist."

Arthur Robbins says:
"I have looked through Shoshanna's portfolio as it is seen here. I can see that this person has a good skill for rendering, and also has the ability to incorporate abstract stylizations into her themes. This combination of abilities is attractive to the general public, and falls within the lay persons ability to understand the stated topic. Her work is more like illustration, as you would see with a Disney kind of commercial vocabulary. My only criticism is the hope that she would use her abundant technical, and illustrative skills, to dig deeper within herself to find more profound meaning in her work. I believe she does very good work, but the best I hope is yet to emerge. I see a lot in her as a human being, she is insightful and spiritual. I encourage her to continue to grow and prosper."
