My passion for science and math culminated in a master's degree in physical science in 1989. My goal was to teach at the community college. For three semesters I taught part-time. I eventually decided to concentrate on my other job in the book printing industry. I worked for a total of about seventeen years in that industry, mostly in pre-press.
My remaining science passion is astronomy. I have been an amateur astronomer for at least thirty-five years. Though health does not permit me to drive to dark sites as I used to, my life was rejuevenated in 2007 with the discovery of remote imaging. Many of my images are displayed on my flickr account.
The remote imaging providers I use or have used are:
Global Rent-a-Scope (GRAS) www.global-rent-a-scope.com/
LightBuckets www.lightbuckets.com
GRAS provides a large range of instruments, many which provide filters for scientific studies. Their wide-field instruments are capable of taking some breathtaking images.
LightBuckets provides outstanding quality. The 24-inch thus far has no comparison, especially for imaging galaxies. Unfortunately, since May the observatory has been closed due to wildfires. Furthermore, it is up for sale.
In the summer of 2009 I purchased an Orion StarShoot DeepSpace Monochrome Imager II which I use with my 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain.
In August 2010 I was invited to join a supernova search project headed by Dr. Andrew Drake of Caltech. He created a website utilizing images from the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey whereby a person can examine images of galaxies to look for supernovae. A list of my discoveries can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/watchingthesky/5272878306
In July 2011 I purchased a Celestron computerized 11-inch telescope for both imaging and visual observing.
Additionally I have an Orion 12-inch Dobsonian and a 17.5-inch Celestron Starhopper Dobsonian.
