I write software.

About ten hours a year I get to make pictures. Ten if I'm lucky.

I was a photo major at R.I.T. about a million years ago. I intended to go the photojournalism route, in the W. Eugene Smith mold. But after two of the best (and most expensive) years of my life, I decided I'd probably starve to death as a photojournalist, so I bailed out. I've been building software systems ever since. The software world has treated me well in many respects, but with 30 years of hindsight the PJ route may have worked out okay too. We'll never know.

Visually, I enjoy rural documentary work, compositions of shape and color, and "everyday oddness" that sometimes borders on the surreal. I especially like the banal vernacular, more like Stephen Shore, William Christenberry, Joel Sternfeld, William Eggelston, Lewis Baltz. Less like National Geographic.

I don't accept testimonials and I'm not here to game the social network. If you see something you like, please drop me an email.

Cheers,
Doug (and Michele, too :)

Btw, I use Capture One for raw conversion and Picasa for everything else. That's it.
