Inspired by hardware, haute couture, and salvaged materials, emiko oye creates one-of-a-kind urban jewelry and conceptual sculptures from recycled materials and precious metals. Her works strive to subtly transform the identity of everyday mundane objects to create new dialogs about our relationship with the environment. Medical equipment, sands from US internment camps, factory scraps, and discarded toys are some of the materials she has repurposed to spark discourse on current socio-political issues. Topics include issues of national concern--war and civil rights violations, corporate greed and the media; to what’s happening locally—health care reforms, and the growth of the tech industry. To make people stop for a moment and reflect, question, and per chance take action—jewelry is a quietly seductive vehicle for interaction and expression, as the recycled materials, already in people’s muscle memory, is the lure that draws them in.

Her work is shown in exhibitions across the United States and in Europe. Recently featured in Lark Book’s Fabulous Jewelry from Found Objects, The Art of Jewelry: Plastic & Resin, and 500 Earrings, as well as published in Metalsmith Magazine, The Crafts Report, and American Craft.
