I think fame is a curse and recognition can be a trap, but I should say something about myself for two reasons:
1)some one who has delighted me might be interested.
2)someone else might worry that I could be a perverted, porno loving, mass AND serial, stalking, killer. I did walk the streets of San Francisco while the Zodiac dork was plying his hobby and (the big confession follows. If you are easily freaked, skip to the next paragraph) I took photos of Ed Gein's homestead. Not impressed are you? He was just the inspiration for the progenitor of all slasher films: Psycho. And to further sweeten this ghoulish pot, the man who wrote the book Hitchcock's screenplay was adapted from, did so in a house I partied in! Well.... it was a surprise shower/going away party for my pregnant wife who was to be a stay at home mom. Her supervisor owned the house by then. Nobody died at the party. Sorry for the letdown.
I'll try one more true story to lighten the mood. I once held my own in a show down w/Robin Williams! I was delivering telegrams in San Fran. He was an unknown street mime. A couple of times I stopped to watch him entertain tourists in Union Square. I don't remember how it started except it was his idea. I think he "acted" startled by me. We took turns a couple of times being the aggressor and timid as I was cutting through the square doing my job. We never spoke. He WAS a mime! About 20 years later I learned that the wild mime in Union Square was one and the same now famous guy: R.W. Shout out to Mr. Williams: Let's get together at Ed Gein's old place w/some peppermint schnapps and tell ghost stories. You'll go 1st, and 2nd and 3rd....I just know you will.
I can't remember not having a camera: Mom's Brownie, one I bought at 11, the YMCA's Rollei with which I got 2 suns rising over Lk. Mendota (talk about neat accidents), Clarence's Aries and the darkroom he lent me 24/7. Thanks Clarence! My Canonflex RP( Frank, you bastard. I didn't turn you in to the cops and you stole my RP as thanks? Bad bad karma.) The A1 that rekindled the flame. The series of poor quality point & shoots (bad karma Nikon) that cooled the flame. The A1 out of mothballs when my son started sports. Thanks Mark. My patience to wait for digital to eliminate shutter lag (surely the devil's work) led to my Canon 20D. I got pretty good & published w/sports and am now expanding my interests and learning from Flickr folks. Thanks to you and all the folks at Valley Camera in Appleton WI for guidance and for the awesome EOS jacket, John. Damn! Now I gotta post a self port.
