Leandro Mallamaci was born in San Lucido in the South of Italy. He studied Medicine in Siena and Specialised in Paediatrics at the Gaslini Institute of Genova. After Specialising he studied and worked for a brief period at the Royal Children’s Hospitals Melbourne and Brisbane (Australia). He practices Paediatrics and Neonatology in the Province of Cosenza (Calabria).
The passion for photography began at an early age in his hometown capturing everyday scenes of village life, portraits of the many personalities he encountered there and panoramic shots of the beautiful Italian countryside. He has visited Australia on many occasions capturing images of something new and unique each time. He exhibited some photos from Kakadu National Park (Northern Territory), Daintree National Park (Far North Tropical Queensland) and the Grampians (Victoria) in the exhibition “ Imagined Australia “ in Prato (Palazzo Vaj – Monash University) from 23rd of May to 10th of June 2007.


Australia: where the dream awakens
In the National Parks of Kakadu (Northern Territory) and Daintree (Far North Tropical Queensland) live the Aborigines according to their intricate mythology or “Dreamtime”. The Dreamtime is based on man, nature and the spirit world, they are mysteriously reunited in a “dream”;, intensely, not as the experience of an ordinary dream, but as in a metaphysical dimension that involves material and spiritual, past and present. This “Dreamtime” is an experience that embraces every aspect of life and is expressed in Aboriginal art, the only “written”; form that exists of the People that otherwise hand down their cultural beliefs and customs, orally.
The secret of life? To travel and wander about these places, which go far beyond any desire, attracted by this splendid, uncontaminated nature in perfect harmony I became lost and found myself again putting this work together.

Leandro Mallamaci è nato a San Lucido nel sud dell’ Italia. Ha studiato Medicina a Siena e si è specializzato in Pediatria presso l’ Istituto Gaslini di Genova. Dopo la specializzazione ha studiato e lavorato per un breve periodo presso il Royal Children’s Hospitals di Melbourne e di Brisbane (Australia). Esercita la professione di Pediatra e Neonatologo in provincia di Cosenza (Calabria).
La passione per la fotografia è iniziata in età giovanile nel proprio paese di origine riprendendo scene di vita giornaliera, ritratti di personalità, scorci di panorami e paesaggi caratteristici. Ha visitato l’ Australia in molte occasioni catturando delle immagini uniche. Ha partecipato alla manifestazione “Imagined Australia”; che si è tenuta in Prato (Firenze), dal 23 Maggio al 10 Giugno 2007, presso la sede del Palazzo Vaj della Monash University; con delle foto rappresentanti Kakadu National Park (Northern Territory), Daintree National Park (Far North Tropical Queensland) e Grampians (Victoria). “Immaginando l' Australia, tra sogno e realtà” è stato il tema della mostra.

Australia: dove veglia il sogno
Nei parchi Nazionali di Kakadu (Northern Territory) Daintree (Far North Tropical Queensland ) gli aborigeni vivono secondo i dettami di un’intricata mitologia, in base alla quale l’uomo, la natura e gli spiriti sono misticamente riuniti in un “sogno”;, inteso non come l'esperienza ordinaria del sonno, ma come dimensione metafisica che coinvolge materia e spirito, passato e presente. Questo “tempo sogno”; è un’esperienza che abbraccia ogni aspetto della vita e trova la sua massima espressione nei dipinti aborigeni, unica forma scritta di una cultura altrimenti tramandata solo su base orale: il segreto della vita? Nel “viaggiare vagare” fra questi luoghi, al di là dei massimi possibili desideri, attratto dalla natura splendidamente incontaminata nella sua perfetta armonia, mi sono perso e ritrovato in questi lavori.
