My name is Henrique Oliveira Pires, and I live in Lisbon, Portugal.
I worked as a Phd Meteorologist and as a professor of Meteorology at the university. My fields of research were ocean waves and climate variability.
Now I am retired and so I have much more time to spend in my passion for bird photography.
I am interested in photography since I was a kid and learned the basics with my father, at a time when we had to choose and introduce by hand every camera setting.
Now I use a Canon EOS 40D and a Canon EOS 400D. For bird photography, a Canon 500 F 4.0 IS and a Canon 100-400 mm F 4.0-5.6 IS zoom lens, sometimes with an extender 1.4x or 2x. When I feel it is needed I use a fill in flash. When possible I use a Gitzo tropod with Wimberley head, a Kirk window mount or a Manfrotto monopod.
Most of my bird pictures are made using my 4 heel drive car as a hide.
