The popularlaboratories picturephone:
a collection of 330X270/248 PIXEL pictures taken on a cellular phone.

The popularlaboratories picturephone documents a constant stream of lo-fidelity, on-the-fly pictures of everyday encounters that are taken and uploaded immediately to the web with a cellular camera phone.

Armed with my sanyo models no. SCP-6600(w) (instated on 12/23.2006) and SCP-8100(w) (retired on 12/23.2006) cellular phone I have taken 2077 pictures (as of 12:47:31 03/22.2007) of
low-rez-330-by-270-pixel-everyday-on-the-spot-unedited no-crop-no-posing-no-setup-straight-from-the-picturephone
stuff I see as I pass by.

The cellular phone equipped with a camera is an extremely small, portable, and espionage-like tool that has produced a new type of instant picture taking.

In my case with the models no. SCP-6600(w) and SCP-8100(w) I am fortunate enough to have a camera with a bad lens, low resolution, no aperture control, no f-stop, no flash and no analog zoom…but it is quick and handy, always in hand or at my side 24/7/365. I truly do just point-and-shoot. All decisions are embedded in the automatic processes of the gadget except that of pointing, shooting and whether to delete the picture or not.

Another primary goal is that all images have a signal-to-noise ratio teetering just slightly above 0.

the formula for SNR is:

S/N = 20 log10(Vs/Vn)

If Vs = Vn, then S/N = 0. With this ratio the signal is supposedly unreadable.

"Poppy (that's MR. POPLABS to you!) makes really, really wide webpages everywhere he goes. That's because his tiny photos can't be hemmed in by limits like industry-imposed "1024" or things like that. Nope, his tiny photos are big as all outdoors and as cozy as your favorite inner sanctum. Go click on some of his pictures. I'm going to!"

"there's this little box next to this text that says:
that's MR. POPLABS will have the chance to review this testimonial before it is published, so don't bother with something rude or nasty.

did he warn them I was gonna do this? I feel so limited now.
Seriously, the coolest thing about poplabs is: he is lowres 24/7. most people sneak in a roll of film from a holga, or use a dslr for "serious" socio-documentary pictures. Not poplabs, even his most recent outbreaks of scabies were documented on cameraphone."

"His profile page says it all. He is one of the world leaders of reading and creating low res images. If there is a symposium of low res art, he will be a speaker there. Well an image of his low res shadow and big boomy voice over the microphone. Kinda that evil doctor sounding voice, you know. Well he does have his own lab!"

"I have this really particular picture in my head of a patch of bulbous bushes and half a sedan swirling around the screen of a cell phone. Then everything freezes. The guy holding the phone half smiles, but moves right on to half a burger sign and a mop and a pair of pants. I love the world of Mr. Poplabs. It may be low-res, but it’s as clear as it gets. Dig around a while. Have a taco. Pet the stuffed birds."
