I used to shoot professionally, but after shelving my camera a few years ago, figured there wasn't anything out there I actually wanted to shoot. Only in theory. Insert a lengthy stint as a sleepless magazine editor, resulting in a refusal to step in Hollywood, I suddenly found there's a whole world out there that doesn't suck. And can succeed in enticing me to pick up a camera.

The cliche of "write what you know" fits just as well with photography -- though more accurately, "photograph what you love" (or at least, really enjoy). Before, I had no interest in shooting the same images I'd seen others do a thousand times before. A) It's unnecessary artistic "clutter", and B) It's guaranteed there's photographers who've already done it much better. It's a recipe for mediocrity, no matter how technically sharp. Yes, uninspired art is tacky and pointless, regardless of how many pieces sold.

Over the past few months I've been investing in my own high quality lenses (a few thousand bucks each and every time... ouch) -- so far, the Canon L-series 16-35mm 2.8/f, L 70-200mm 2.8/f, and 50mm 1.8/f. They are dreamy. And totally hott.
Next big purchase: Upgrading from my now-ancient 10D to the 5D.
I. can't. wait.

All photos by me, unless otherwise noted -- the camera tends to get passed around my friends.

PS. I is tired - this pseudo-essay shall get a proper edit when I am no longer sleep-deprived. And in front of my computer. And remember to get back to this. Right.
