The Letterpress Studio at the School of Visual Concepts, established in 2001, aims to promote the use of letterpress printing by operating as a living, working museum and educational and cultural center focused on the history and contemporary use of the printed word.

Instructors from the region include studio founder and manager Jenny Wilkson, Amy Redmond, Jessica Spring, Carl Montford, Bonnie Thompson Norman, Jules Remedios Faye, and the late Christopher Stern. Guest instructors include Paul Moxon and Jim Sherraden.

This is truly the community’s print shop, sustained by local professional printers, and accessible to students of all levels. Thanks to the help of a friendly and supportive letterpress printing community, our print shop is a veritable museum of vintage equipment and holds a premier metal and wood type collection, near nearly all of it from local sources. Over 300 different fonts of lead type and 40 fonts of wood type currently reside in the shop, and we are forever adding to the collection. At this time, we make use of a 19th century Chandler & Price treadle operated platen press, a 19th century Pearl treadle operated platen press, four tabletop platen presses, a beautifully restored 19th century iron handpress, and five Vandercook cylinder proofing presses that date from the mid 20th century.
