The humble beginning of a Parsimonous Shooter (Who is the real Rave/Rolan Garcia?)

If you think he’s just someone who has extra money to spend for something artistic though not really having the talent for it-think again. He is truly a photographer by heart equipped with enough gear, technical and creative know-how and activities like any other who, unlike him, does nothing else but photography.

To prove the point, he is a busy photographer specializing in festivals, landscapes and photojournalism. He is more thank just a member of a photography club, but an officer himself, he was a former facilitator/founder of Flickers Photo Society of Asia Pacific College. He once held the position of President for almost two years. Aside from Flickers, he was the founder and former president of Explorers’ Club. He seldom joins competitions but when he, the businessman participated at the APC’s Photo Competition many years back, he managed to bag first and third place respectively. Also, his works had been featured at Manila Bulletin and 100 UP’s website for being Photo of the Week.

“Photography is my creative outlet to express myself as an artist. My passion for photography is what keeps me going. It gives me more meaning to life,” Rolan said.

His shots would rather explain that more convincingly since no words are needed to convey the beauty and thoughts filling up his images. He incorporates movements in his images, making his pictures more dynamic, more fluid and providing a more organic flowing feel.

Way back in high school, he was already a journalist and campus photographer for the student paper. He had his canon camera around his neck wherever he was in the campus, amusingly pre-visualizing what he’s going to be in the field even before he became a businessman.

His photography journey somehow went to a break for some time, as if he was waiting for something to happen. Then digital photography came and that was precisely he’s waiting for. He’s one of those who were able to adjust immediately to the big change, using the early Sony and Canon Digital Camera. Currently, I'm using a Canon EOS 450D and 50D.

He owe all of his awards and achievements to all of his mentors and trainers. Mr. Robert E. Regala, a National Geographic Channel Photo Contest Finalist and founder of 100 UP and FPC, trained and honed the photography skills of Rolan to become successful in this art. Aside from Mr. Regala, he was also trained by respective and well-known professional photographers like Erick Lirios, Linus Escalindor III and Dennis Sibayan.

His principles as a lensman shaped him even better like his belief that there is no secret formula and techniques to becoming a good shooter, meaning, all it takes is a good balance of technical skills, creative ideas, people skills, good character and business professionalism to make it.

“I believe that different types of photography have different sets of discipline and set of mind. Also, I would like to advise to everyone that the success will not measure on your camera, it is measured on your character and passion for it and always dedicate your success to the Glory of GOD.”
