I have been collecting Civil War cartes de visite, a photographic format about the size of a modern baseball card, since my teen years. In 2000, I began researching identified soldiers in my collection and was inspired by their stories.

The following year I began writing a column in the Civil War News, and published my first book, Faces of the Civil War: An Album of Union Soldiers and Their Stories (The Johns Hopkins University Press) in 2004. A companion volume, Faces of the Confederacy: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories, followed in 2008.

My forthcoming book profiles men of color who participated in the Civil War and it is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2012. I am also a contributing author to the New York Times series Disunion.
