Spesso ho pensato che se la fotografia fosse "difficile" nel vero senso della parola - nel senso cioé che la creazione di una semplice fotografia richiedesse lo stesso tempo e la stessa fatica di un buon acquerello o di una buona incisione - il salto qualitativo della produzione media sarebbe enorme. L'assoluta facilità con cui possiamo produrre una immagine banale porta spesso ad una totale mancanza di creatività. Dobbiamo tener presente che una fotografia può contenere soltanto quello che ci abbiamo messo dentro, e che nessuno ha mai saputo sfruttare appieno le possibilità di questo mezzo d'espressione.

I have often thought that if photography were difficult in the true sense of the term -- meaning that the creation of a simple photograph would entail as much time and effort as the production of a good watercolor or etching -- there would be a vast improvement in total output. The sheer ease with which we can produce a superficial image often leads to creative disaster.
