"Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful."
-Joshua J. Marine
Is She a Grand Scheme or Just a Tie-Dyed Dream?
Growing up in foster care, Emmy was pushed, prodded, and forced to conform to a set of rules. She feels she was never afforded the freedom to express her innermost thoughts or passions in her chaotic and often violent world as a child. She has learned to use art as a way to cope with her environment and to express thoughts she could not otherwise express. Remember those images, ideas, and concepts that cannot be expressed or even implied inside the realm of language? These thoughts that seem almost impossible to express are the cognitive source of art. She captures these thoughts and uses them as a means of coping with her environment and passionate nature now as an adult. She has been learning to use the tools she needs to get these thoughts out of her head and into a tangible form. Where once we could hear only a hint of her whistling murmur, she can now complete her concerto with a passionate and bold stroke.
Compared with her original vision, Emmy’s work seems to take on a life of its own. In the beginning of anyone’s life there is a choice to take that first breath, in that one single instant we forever change history regardless of what choice was made. Just like that first human breath, the moment Emmy pushes the shutter release she becomes aware of history changing itself. As Emmy pieces together the components of her art, she watches carefully for each complete piece to begin to emerge as something new in the world. At the precise moment when all the components begin to appear as a whole, she stands in awe of her creations. It is at this moment that she sees a soul being birthed. She often feels as if each piece is creating itself. It is as if she is merely a conduit through which a new energy organizes and builds itself a body.
Emmy wants each of these new entities to tell its own story. She wants each of her pieces to mean something different to each individual viewer. She claims that most of the time her work either has little meaning or that the meaning is too delicate, or too frenzied for the majority of people she knows. She wants it to reach out and spin its own web around each person, so that each piece becomes a different truth for each viewer. She wants each piece to attach itself to, and consume each viewer’s private memories and emotions.
Emmy’s work is influenced by elements in the world that most people consider to be imperfect, or weak. She builds upon imperfection because it is the only true indicator of character and beauty. She captures imperfection as the summit of her art. She is inspired by things that surround her every day, and uses them as a creative base. As the proud mother of five closely spaced children she has no shortage of material from which to draw. Emmy is a survivor of a 12 year domestic abuse marriage in which she uses as a foundation to bring awareness to the world around her.
With her work, it is difficult to ignore the obvious experience and background Emmy has in graphic design. In addition to photography and graphic design, she is an entrepreneur, business ideas person, CEO of a small assessment corporation, movie scriptwriter, wife, mother, and friend to all, even those pesky telemarketers if they happen to catch her on the telephone at home.
The most important thing to Emmy is the opportunity to create art. To be an artist, even an unknown one, is more important to her than going forth and finding notoriety. She feels the only way for her to create is to continue growing as an artist whether by introducing new techniques, new mediums, or a combination of both. Her primary focus is on creating art that reaches across boundaries. She creates art that speaks figuratively and demands its own place within its world. She tries to create art that will link people to her, and with her.

Gabriela Camerotti says:
"I've found Emmy's amazing work on my first weeks on Flickr, and I can say it was very very inspiring!
Her pics are amazing and she's got such a great eye for photography! But what inspires me the most is the way that we can get closer of people who lives far far away just by seeing pictures on their photostream and sharing my own.
I can say we're family here on Flickr, Emmy! Thanks ;)"11th January, 2008

high nocturnal style says:
"Emmy is the shiz nizzle. Bold, caps lock, underlined, italicized, bold.
She's also the bam bizzle. One of my favorite photographers on Flickr.
Go, Emmy, go."8th November, 2007

Black wolf says:
"This young lady would be admirable even with out the photographic ability. She has experianced hardship and strife and instead of being run down she has stood up and fought back. Not just for herself but for injustice where ever she finds it.
This shows in the photography, moving imagery that can shock and tug at the heart at the same time. The ability in a photograph to bring an issue home and make the viewer think.
But that is not all, Emmy can also see the fun and quirky side of life too, which shine through in her family pictures and the obvious love she has for her children.
How do I know all this, about a lady that I have never met, I went through her photostream and discovered her heart and soul and an honesty that is rare and refreshing."15th October, 2007

"Ms Ryan points her camera at things and you are moved. It is simple a person focused on becoming the change. She is also a person who has mastered her craft - this combination is unstoppable."
