Many people ask me “Matthew, how do you take your pictures?” and I always answer in the following way:
“With 1 passionate heart, 2 hands, a 3rd clear-sighted eye, non-stop work throughout all 4 seasons, the transformation of 5 to 6 of the world’s basic colors giving way to a brilliant and new 7th color ”
My first camera, the Nikon F2 (1983), was a gift that my father brought back from Japan during spring when I was still a second-year student in Junior High School. Because photography at this time was an expensive hobby, I really didn’t have time to continue pursuing it. During the summer of 2005, the darkest year of my life, I nearly lost my life two times. After this period, I consequently took up photography again. What began as a way for me to escape reality has now become a newly opened door for me which has given me a newfound outlook on the meaning of life.
People used to tell me, “You don’t need those things. There’s no way you can become a photographer.” Because of this, I lost my entire set of equipment. In the winter of 2005, I carelessly placed my equipment in my car which resulted in having my car windows shattered along with all of my equipment stolen. Thereafter, I reached a point in my life when I wanted to just give up. But I never did. Instead, I withdrew all of my savings to buy my third camera and continued pursuing my dreams one step at a time. This path was both arduous and difficult for me.
To my dear friends, I would like to express my deepest thanks for your encouragement and support. No matter where you are, I am grateful for everything that I have learned and for what I have shared with all of you. To those who provided me with criticisms or suggestions, I love you too because all of this acts as a compelling incentive that pushes my spirit to continue moving forward.
No matter the gamut of human emotions or vicissitudes of life, I take pictures of anyone and anything. I do not have a specified trademark or specialty because I can only photograph what I see and what I believe deserves to be captured in a picture. As for the value or appraisal of beauty or art, this I leave to my viewers to discern because it is not a personal specialty of mine.
Although I do not understand much photography and theory, I do have the courage to experiment and try to explore how to better express the concepts found within my work. Given this, I ask for a helping hand. If you really like my work and hope to utilize it, please let me know in advance. Another option could be to get in touch with my agent first. I’m not really asking for much, so I hope that you could please honor this small request.
My language skills are really not that great, but if you are willing, I genuinely believe that we could become good friends and maybe even partake in a discussion over our collective photography experience or anything else you would like to know. If someday you see me hauling a traveling bag and walking around your city or country, please give me a holler. Perhaps we could have a cup of coffee and afterwards you could allow me to take a picture so that I can remember you. You could even perhaps become my tour guide to better help me see more of this beautiful world. Thank you.
