"For me, taking pictures is a soulful exercise ... photography is a way of disconnecting from daily life in a therapeutic way - trying to see the world from a different perspective. I don't take pictures for anyone but myself, but I reluctantly admit that it is nice to think that someone else might enjoy my photographs. In a sense, as someone once said, for me photography is essentially an exercise in trying to capture one's own shadow." MH

Please don't take offense but note that I will typically drop a contact who doesn't interact with me frequently in some way (make a comment on my photography, send me a Flickrmail etc., but PLEASE DO NOT send me the dreaded self-promotional Flickrmail that says "SO and SO wants you to see a photo" - links to someone else's photos are OK but I will block contacts that self-promote their own photos too much.) ... I truly enjoy the friends I have made on Flickr and I try and keep my contact list small so I can pay attention to their photography and comment on their work on a regular basis. If you haven't commented on my photography in my last 10 postings, which typically takes me several weeks or more, then expect to be dropped as a contact. I have found in my years that the old adage that "we reap what we sow" is profound wisdom indeed!

I'm not a 'gearhead' ... the photographs that inspire me, make me weep or feel joy were almost always taken with a camera that is less capable than my own. Photography is not about cameras any more than painting is about brushes.

Addendum: If a person buys a camera we refer to them as a photographer; if a person buys a flute we say that they are a person who owns a flute ... hmmmh?

1. Nikon vs. Canon - who cares!

2. Digital vs. film - who cares even more!

3. Well meaning people who want to tell you how they would have created your image.

I'm a proud resident of Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada

"I am no longer a trophy hunter with a life-list of places to go. There is great beauty in my own backyard and I think learning to photograph the everyday and the ‘mundane’ will make you a better photographer than constantly trying to go to new and exotic locales. Depth comes from immersion and not from a shallow two week whirlwind tour. The best photographs I see are from people that immerse themselves into a location they love. I love Canada, I live in Canada and so I plan to photograph my country. Canada excites me as much as any foreign locale I have been to. Why not know your homeland?"
(Quote from Darwin Wiggett - a superb Canadian Landscape Photographer)

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly!

This is my "backyard" - actually, more correctly, I suppose it is my frontyard :)

Contemplating words exchanged and photos viewed,
Michael Hill ... ( as well as enjoying a literary appreciation )... holds an uncanny ' eye ' for the abstract and nature's artistic licence to create utter beauty within that theme.
I feel happy and honoured to be able to share views of the Magnificent Keefer Lake, Canada and it's accompanying and so varied coloured skies, clear reflective waters and wildlife.
It is a delight to understand that another human being has stood on the shores of a place he loves...ready to enjoy, photograph and share one of life's true treasures....
A man, it would appear, with Heart and Wit as well as creativity.

I was pleased to find a poem written by P.B.Shelley which compliments his work and vice versa...

" When I arose and saw the dawn,
    I sigh'd for thee;
When light rode high, and the dew was gone,
And noon lay heavy on flower and tree,
And the weary Day turn'd to his rest
    Lingering like an unloved guest,
    I sigh'd for thee... "

a verse from " To the Night "

It is a pleasure to have met you Michael through the sharing of our photographs..
