Its been almost a year since I have been on Flickr so its time to update my profile. My greatest passion and joy has been training African elephants and big cats for the past 11 years.I am retired now but travel often to see the elephants and cats that I took care of.
I know there are alot of mixed feelings regarding zoos and captive animals. Like most things in life there are good and bad sides to everything. I acknowledge sadly that there are alot of bad zoos and there are people that have no business taking care of animals, especially elephants.
There are 3 African elephants,Dottie,Tara, and Kelly that I took care of and they are my family along with several lions and tigers. They have always been treated with respect and much love.I learned so much from them and they have made me a better person. My photo stream is full of my life with them and I am so honored to have been able to be in their presence everyday. I have posted them in hopes of openning some minds and that people will get a sense of their intelligence and beauty and to show that all zoos and the people that take care of them are not all bad, I wanted to share the joy that they brought me with others.
I have received some negative comments that were very disrespectful, not only to me but my elephants. I know that alot of people perceive elephant trainers as bad well I'm not one of them nor do I condone any bad treatment to animals.
I am very open to discussing zoos, captive animals and elephants. I can only tell you of my experience and what I have seen. I ask that you don't leave any negative comments regarding my life with these wonderful creatures.
I must say that being on Flickr has been a wonderful experience. I have seen some amazing photography but most of all I have met some brilliant and wonderful people that I am proud to call my friends. They are all so supportive and inspiring in so many ways.
Thanks for stopping by!

"Cilinia takes the most amazing photos of animals, and her love for them just shines out of every shot. Her closeups and use of light really make her animal portraits special. It's not just wild animals, either...Cilinia's horse photos are unique and lovely.
Her portraits of people and travel photos are just as fine. She has a wonderful series of branches on a lonely beach that are just otherwordly!
Moreover, she is a wonderful, informative, and funny contact.
    Thanks for sharing the beauty!"

"I wanted to give a testimony to Cilinia's amazing skills as a photographer! I am amazed at her talent! I first fell in love with her long lashed elephants....but I love everything from her cats to her people. I think her pottery photo's are my favs but who can pick just one fav from her photo stream?! I love the way she uses natural light and shadows as well and her composition is always well thought out! I always look forward to her uploads. I am honored to call her my friend!

ps. The only bad thing I can say about her is that she introduced me to flickr and now I'M ADDICTED! =)

    "Cilinia always cheer me up!
Her personality shines through in every image she uploads. Her great love for the animals, her tenderness presenting the world around her and in her fantastic portraits and her incredible black and white images in her homemade studio...
Her photos are the kind, that makes me sad I'm not born with the English language, and I find myself lost for words in my limited vocabulary.
I will recommend Cilinia's images to everyone, who doesn't think of photography as a personal way of expression.
    Go and explore her pages!
    You won't regret it!"

"cilinia powell gives you everything you want in a photograph and more - except sometimes for light - and on these occasions you end up seeing more of her subjects than you would have believed possible. In fact out of her shadows comes a clarity most photogs' highlights aren't equipped to handle.

cilinia powell is a retired Zookeeper who worked with a variety of animals - notably lions and elephants. And clearly one of the skills she learned as a Zookeeper was simply that of observing - not so simple as it looks - and in photograph form her observances prove to be brilliant.

But animals aren't her only subjects. Her wonderful photos of The Boneyard are haunting and underscore this clarity cilinia powell finds using the starkest light, often in B&W. See her stunning photos such as 'Twisted' and any of her photos called 'Bone Yard'. What cilinia powell finds on beaches look like the remains of great sea battles - fought centuries before.

I like her people photos best in B&W too, since they give rise to recollections I have of live jazz. See 'Zoe' and 'The Rose Boy' and 'Vin' photos, together with anything titled 'Self', 'Me', and 'My Better Half'. I'm including 'Protective' in this group too, from her 'Primates' set. I know this last photo's subject isn't human, but I include it because it gives rise to the sweetest music of all.

But if her B&W's conjure jazz, then her color photos of animals would probably inspire more symphonic music. Whether it's a photo of Kariba, Kelly, Mr Bad Ass or assorted other friends and troublemakers, cilinia powell conveys their beauty, their sorrows, their dignity and their tomfoolery in an understated photographic style that is the most consistent and distinctive I've seen on Flickr.

Look at the way she uses a lack of light to reveal 'Farasi' in 'Kitty Cats', 'Dorothy' in 'The Girls', 'Orangutan 2' and 'Madu' and 'Prick Up Your Ears' and all the 'The Pasture' photos. And just for kicks also note, when she does turn up the lights, the harebrained obstinacy of Mr Bad Ass in 'Face Off'.

What's also clear in her photos is the respect and love with which cilinia powell treats her animals - and the fact that this respect and love is returned by the animals themselves. Note in particular the photos of her with Kariba and Dottie.

Who needs highlights when you have shadows like these? You begin to wish other photogs would use light with this much restraint too. cilinia powell's darks are the most illuminating on Flickr."

"I just love Cilinia's work! She burst onto flickr last year with some of the most amazing images of the animals that she cares for. Each new photo was jaw-droppingly good, allowing an insight into intimate animal gestures. Her close up captures of details such as their eyes, allowed me to see these magnificent beasts in a way that I'd never been able to see before.

Ever since then it has been a pleasure to watch Cilinia experiment with & master many styles of photography, including landscapes, portraits & still life. What a talent!

Cilinia is such a kind & supportive flickr friend, offering encouragement daily, she is truly generous. I'm so proud to know her!"

"I think Cilinia is one of my unique contacts on the Flickr. She is not only a great photographer but also her interest (rather passion) in wild life gives here a unique edge to other photographers. Ansel Adams had said "Photography is a way of telling what you feel about what you see." and I think one cannot "see" any subject properly unless one has true feelings for that particular subject. That's why I think Cilinia is unique as she is not shooting a subject (animals) but she actually has feelings for them. Those feelings of love and care really show up in her work. Its just because of that passion that even Rhino would look like a rose in her photos :-)

Cilinia, you are great! and I am honored to have you as a contact. Thank you for sharing your great passion both for the wild life and the art of photography with us."

"Cilinia is the ultimate "animal lover" who also happens to be a photographer or a photographer who also happens to be an "animal lover". She manages to capture each animals' individual personality. Her professionalism, creative eye, artistic talent and special affinity for animals combine to produce beautiful photographs and I cherish each moment spent looking at the photos. Thank you, Cilinia for sharing your photos and for being my friend :-)"
