The first picture I took was with my Dad’s 1950’s Voigtlander Vitessa (with his help of course). My first camera was a plastic Kodak 110 I got for Christmas in 1980. Since then I’ve been an entirely self taught camera geek, shooting on everything from small format Polaroids and Holgas to the Nikon D80 I carry around with me today. I’m also in the process of digitally restoring my father’s extensive collection of color slides from 1950-1969.

The D80 was a recent addition to the camera arsenal and is a work camera that I’m still learning my way around. For simplicity’s sake, I also favor a Canon Powershot 610, since the bulk of what I do for tableauvivante.livejournal.com is market and food photography in situations where being discreet is more valuable than picture resolution (though I wouldn’t mind upgrading to the 640, especially as it echoes my Dad’s old Voigtlander).

I wander Southern California and document food and where it comes from. This account is dedicated mostly to that singular purpose. I’m learning more about the D80 and what it can do via other people’s EXIF data and discussion groups here on Flickr. I’m hoping to find a good local DSLR workshop to augment my own piecemeal learning.
