I shot my first pictures on a borrowed camera in 1969 at he age of 11, and owned my first camera, a Canon TL, two years later (I still have it.) For the succeeding decade, I was an enthusiastic amateur photographer. Then other things intervened, and I seldom picked up a camera for the next twenty years. I decided to get back into it on a more serious level in 2005, and this photostream is part of the result. I owe debts to many photographers, past and present, whose work I have admired, for showing me important things about what to do with this thing called a camera. Specifically I acknowledge Ansel Adams and Lynn Radeka their passion for textures and sharpness, and Dan and Cindy Hartmann of Cooke City, MT, for showing me the importance of the dialogue of subject and space, and when not to over-crop an image; but most of all Carleton Watkins, whose work showed me more about how to aim a camera than any number of lessons could have.

This stream is part portfolio, yes, but also part playground, where I try out new ideas, and part chronicle of the weird and silly--I often whip out my cameraphone when I see something ridiculous. My academic background is scientific rather than artistic--I have had no formal artistic training, and you may find my style more austere and less "artsy" than that of some others here. But I am not afraid of pointing a camera at anything, and sometimes interesting things result.

A few of my more popular images are now available as high-quality prints through Imagekind. They are identified in the images' captions here in my stream. I hope to add more eventually. If you see one you want and it is not included, drop me an f-mail and I will try to make it available, though this may take time.
