"Guardian Camera Club: Hugh Spicer portfolio
A review of Hugh Spicer's portfolio.

This portfolio starts with the elegant 'Bute Tree', which is about as simple as a photo can be and works beautifully. In contrast 'Chatelherault Country Park' is complex and less easily readable. I feel it needs more contrast to enhance the detail in the trees. 'Loch Pityoulish forest track' has a great sense of depth, the dynamic composition starts with the diagonal trees on the right hand side, which draws the eye forward and along the track. 'Loch Pityoulish' is another classic composition, only the sharp focus on the foreground grass detracts… 'Loch Voil Mist' has great black & white tonality, the line of the hills directing the eye to the single tree. In such elevated company 'Loch Voil, March 2006' simply looks ordinary; it's cluttered and the 'reflection' idea is a bit of a cliché. Nonetheless there are some excellent shots in this set, demonstrating real technical know how"

I'm Hugh Spicer - Glasgow born and bred.

I'm proud of and love my home country, Scotland. I really enjoy visiting the Scottish Islands and Highlands as often as I can - and where I go my camera goes with me. I have been a digital photographer since September 2001 and moved on to using a D/SLR in February 2006.

I very often get requests to use my photographs for use on websites/blogs/commercial websites/calendars etc.

If you would like to use any of my photos - or for commercial purposes - please contact me by flickrmail - or by hotmail at:
hughspicer@hotmail.com

If you wish to use any of my images for commercial purposes please be advised that I do, understandably, charge a fee for the use of the image[s].

Please respect the fact that I retain copyright of my photographs.

I have had quite a few photographs published in Scottish calendars....here are a selection of those published....

www.wildswimming.co.uk/coastbook.html

My favourite places are.....

* the Outer Hebrides (Barraigh (Barra), Uibhist a Deas
(South Uist), Benbecula, North Uist and Harris

* Arran

* and the Inner Hebrides.....Colonsay, Coll, Tiree etc...

* Also the Orkney Isles (Hoy and Sanday in particular)

Any free time I have is spent cycling, photographing and wild camping there.

Most of the the photographs on flickr were taken with the latest camera which is:-

* a Canon 350D digital SLR - certainly the more recent
pictures. And the lenses I use are:

* Sigma 10-20mm

* Canon 18-55mm

* Sigma 55-200mm

(Some of the older photos were taken with my compact Nikon Coolpix 995 which I've had 7 years now)

I'm really happily addicted to flickr (there is no known cure) and I hope you enjoy looking at my photos ;-)

My sets are listed in semi-chronological order.

I appreciate any feedback - even if its negative so long as its constructive.

    Douglas Griffin says:

    "Hugh's images are one of the highlights of Flickr for me. His enthusiasm for getting out and about in the wilder parts of Scotland (especially the islands) really shines through the pages of his Photostream. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has spent 5 or 10 minutes looking through his photos, and gone straight from there to the Calmac timetables!

    Keep them coming, Hugh! :-)"
