My lifelong interest in the visual arts began as early as I can remember. My love for drawing, painting, pottery, fiber art and all things visual culminated with a fine art degree in 1972 from the University of California at Irvine. Wanting to explore the commercial side of art, I took courses in graphic design and illustration for two years at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Here I developed technical aspects of art and design which instilled in me an interest in cutting edge technology as it applies to art. Before the widespread availability of digital tools I used black and white film cameras and spent many hours in darkrooms enjoying the magic of images emerging from chemical baths. The available access to a darkroom and the ability to print and process my own images later inspired my interest in the 'digital darkroom.' Working without color put a focus on the story and the strong graphic, compositional elements of my images still visible in my work today.
