archidave's photostream
|

I would describe myself as a modern architect, designer and antiquarian. I'm not a professional photographer, just been taking photos for as long as I can remember. I only take pics of stuff that i like, though most of it ends up as old and historic stuff. This looks a good way of showing my pics off to anyone who is interested!
Born in Yeovil, Somerset, spent the University years in Cardiff, a place I now loathe! Moved to Bristol in 1998 and have put down roots. Plenty of photo opportunities round here. Lots of interesting places around the city as well. A few shots of buildings I have designed and seen completed, and a few drawings and reconstructions I have drawn for my own pleasure.
Obviously I have a preference for architectural subjects which. I hope I have managed to capture something of the essence of the places I have shot, and show why I chose a subject. Colour, light and shade appeal to me in selecting my favourite images, and from my photos you might think that My life exists in some fantasy location where the sky is always brilliant blue, there are always little puffy clouds and THERE ARE NO PEOPLE!!. (This is not true, as I write this it is miserable outside, grey and floods!).
Since I upgraded to a DSLR and have been taking shots in Raw format i have been increasingly manipulating my images and experimenting a little more to create new visions, though I steer well clear of HDR and try to keep my images looking at least realistic.
Always happy to receive constructive and helpful criticism, indeed any comments chat and banter are welcome. I try to reply to everyone so gimmie something to work with ;0) However People who state that they are just "speaking as they find" actually mean that they lack any basic understanding of politeness or good manners.

OCULUS - An Ar... By David Martyn
Always happy to discuss the sale of my images for publication etc, but please don't ask me to donate shots for free if you are not a charitable organisation. If I do find my shots used for commercial purposes including web sites I will request reimbursement and/or pursue legal action.

"Viewing Archidave's photostream and the results of his expeditions is an ongoing delight. He manages to convey not only a love of architecture but captures the atmosphere and emotional impact of being there. Not only a witty tag writer he has captured an incredibly wide range of moods in self portraiture but is fearless in trying new shots and deserves a time machine. More please, Dave."

"Dave's photos express a lot of character and express the character of buildings and bristol. The buildings in his photos suggest history and life and rugged character - not just building materials and abstract designs."

Marcus Hiatus says:
"Dave has done something strange; he has made me look at "old" architecture with new appreciation at a time I am mostly interested in contemporary buildings. That says a lot about the quality of his work.
I am thrilled that he has started showing us his pictures of people, I can't wait to see where this will lead to!
Cheers, Dave!"17th May, 2008

"No puedo recordar cómo encontré las fotos de Dave, pero una vez que las descubrí me volví adicto a ellas. Visión privilegiada para la arquitectura, maestro del encuadre y del color, de los pequeños detalles que diferencian una foto cualquiera de una pequeña obra de arte...
¡Enhorabuena archidave y sigue deleitándonos con tu saber hacer!"
I don't remember how I met Dave's photos but once I discovered them I turned adicted. Privileged vision for architecture, master of colour and composition, of little details that make the difference between a simple photo and a work of art...
Congrats archidave and go on!""15th October, 2007

Martin Beek says:
"Since first encountering Dave's Martyn's work some months ago I've become convinced that he is a very good photographer indeed, that is; someone who uses his camera to explore subjects which appeal to him and portrays them in a meaningful way. Most of his subject matter so far is architectural with a strong antiquarian interest. The subjects are excellent, the images clear, sharp and thoughtfully composed. Indeed they are the sort of photographs we should see more of in local guides on architecture. He has done many buildings in Bristol a very great service. These picture have caused me to look afresh at these places that I vaguely thought I knew. It has been a joy to exchange comments from time to time. I wish Dave well as he presses on with his work, I hope many will take time to visit and enjoy these places if only on the screen."
