Mooganic says:
"Damn fine chap. Thinking of Mr BigMacTrac brings to mind the damned bother in Mesopotamia, with the old 16th Poona Rifles.
I was perusing the Thunderer for the latest odds on the gee gees and an
article on page seven caught my bloodshot eye. Apparently there's been a bit
of a to-do in Mesopotamia. I thought you might have missed it what with the
boat race dominating the news, so here it is brief.
-Mesopotamian Campaign "Frightfully dusty but end in sight"-
Last Tuesday, Lord Huffington-Cholmondley, Colonel in charge of the
Hampshire Fusiliers (formerly the 18th Hove Irregulars Light Infantry)
currently stationed in Basra, declared that his riflemen will revert to
standard red tunic and pith helmet in order to reassure natives of their
good intent.
Furthermore, the operation code named "Reassert Arabic Justice" or Raj,
continues to proceed along orderly lines. 'The Mesopotamian tribesmen we
have captured are especially helpful' the Colonel added, 'I believe they
rather look forward to their eight hour stints laying out cricket pitches in
the desert. Good for the morale'. When asked if there had been any
resistance to the Raj the Colonel replied 'Strange cove, Johnny Tribesman.
One minute they are jumping about hooting and the next they are trying to
negotiate deals with British Petroleum. Queer sort really."
-Firm discipline in the ranks and impeccable tailoring, sap tribesmen of
will to fight-
The Foreign and Colonial Office has denied that it is currently considering
opening the Western Persian desert for exciting holidays for Gentlemen
Adventurers, claiming that there is nowhere to have tiffin for at least six
hundred miles, only "sand and wretched oil".
However, in a blow to the official line, a source close to the Ministry of
War, stated that there was no sign yet of the "Martini Henry Rifles of
Limited Destruction" in the possession of wayward tribesmen. Our reporter
was promptly arrested as a fifth columnist. We have decided not to protest
his case, as we are fairly sure one of his relatives was Prussian."2nd April, 2005
