Joey Harrison's photostream
|
I got serious about photography in my late teens. Then I went through a long stretch of snapshooting. Then I got serious again. Then I went through another snapshooting phase. A few years ago I discovered photo blogs, which refueled my passion. In short order I got a digital camera and started my own photo blog (now euthanized).
My return to passionate photography wouldn't have happened without the incredible inspiration offered by my flickr friends. Thank you all. And great thanks, also, to those who visit and comment. Your interest is incredibly stimulating and encouraging.

"Joey is Genius. I don't like photos of people (should be obvious from my stream). In fact, I don't like people that much -- but I continue to follow Joey's stream year after year, photo after photo, because his portraits are sensational and masterful. The expressions, the cropping, the lighting -- sheer genius -- non-judgemental, humorous, perfection. Simply awesome. One of the best photographers out there -- period."

chuckp says:
"Joey is a wonderful polyglot photographer. At once cataloging the built landscape with the dispassionate eye of a semiologist building a private encyclopedia of vernacular architecture and signage, and assembling a fabulous history of amateur photography from his mother's negatives, his own prescient longitudinal study of coiffure featuring himself with his siblings (don't miss the "Time-lapse family series" set), and the piles of found photos he's assembled from flea markets and probably dumpster-dives. And after all that, he attacks the streets, social gatherings and the occasional "official event" with an increasingly sharp street photographer's eye. Not to mention that he's a very very funny guy."

URBAN PHOTOS says:
"Joey, I hope you're organizing all the signage you've captured into some sort of a book. There are quite a few sign people out there, besides me! You've really done an amazing job of finding these fragments of 20th century America, which are long gone..."

Tom Spaulding says:
"Joey Harrison is the Flickr person that I wish I had the patience, persistence, and skill to be. An abandoned, decrepit, and decaying building in a bad neighborhood with a "NO TRESPASSING" sign is an invitation, rather than a deterrent, to Joey. But once he gets great shots from such a subject, he doesn't rush them onto Flickr. He saves up a number of photos of similar subjects to post at once, giving greater impact than if he had posted them individually, or he gets someone knowledgeable on the subject to provide commentary before posting.
If he could just recognize the photogenic qualities of cheeseburgers, he would be my perfect Flickr contact."11th November, 2007

"My hero. Joey was the first person I contacted on Flickr, since he was also the first photostream I ever really looked at. He was helpful & willing to answer all my newbie questions. Not only did his photos inspire me to do more, his Mother's photos (also in his stream) just flattened me like a steamroller. I awed by them. Photographic talent runs in this family. I've since met Joey in person a few times, and I can say he's just as interesting and humorous person as he is here. A great guy, and someone I gladly consider a friend."

"It wouldn't be flickr to me without the consistently involving photos of Joey Harrison. Joey was one of the first people here who became increasingly real to me as a photographer with a complex personality, a great eye, and a perpetually satisfying revelation of American artifact. I'm a bit less blind to things as a result of Joey's smart photos, his humor, his attention to his world. Thanks, Joey"

"Joey has been a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration to me almost since I joined Flickr. Directly, he's taught me about perspective correction, and indirectly, he's taught me all kinds of things about what's worth pointing a camera at and how best to do it. (He's also responsible for my newfound interest in painted brick buildings.) I find not only his talent inspiring, but the fact that he's so prolific as well.
Thanks, Joey, for your friendship, for making me laugh so often, and for showing me how to grow as a photographer."12th December, 2006

Newleaf says:
"I can't believe no one has written a testamonial for Joey. Well, then, let me be the first. I stumbled into his photostream through...Signs, I think, and rapidly got lost. You know how you go to the dictionary for one word and end up spending the night in the Rs? That was what it was like. First the signs, then the southwest photos, then the Detroit photos, then Gas Station Museum and on and on. And not only are Joey's tastes eclectic, but his skills are both varied and vast. He captures candid motion shots of his dog (and others) as well as stationary building fronts and collections of people, places and objects in his own unique and fabulous way.
Plus, he seldom (if ever) makes punctuation errors."2nd August, 2006

"Joey's pictures range far and wide and have a special focus on the traces of bygone days, sometimes vibrant, sometimes fading, but always with a sense of wonder. He's given me a totally new perspective on the American Heartland.
Thanks, Joey, for one of the finest photostreams on flickr."28th June, 2006
