I started taking pictures more seriously at the age of twelve with an Asahi Pentax K1000 (still working!) which belonged to my mother, but I never developed my techniques enough - in part due to the normal lack of discipline teenagers tend to have (e.g., I would have never thought of writing down the settings of each photo on a notebook to know what I was doing wrong or right afterwards), but also due to the lack of information (remember: no internet or google back then!), and of course because of the massive cost that film photography had, especially for a teenager. And who can forget the eternity between that faithful shutter “click” and having the results in your hands?
In 2002, with the (r)evolution of digital photography, the little photography bug started appearing in me again. I still remember one of my best friends saying at the time that we were still many years away from the moment digital photography could compete in terms of quality with film photography…. Who would have imagined that barely four years later in 2006 that Canon, Nikon, and even old traditional Kodak would have stopped production of most models of film cameras in every segment?
Digital photography has many advantages over film photography - besides the question of cost (you pay the same to take one or one thousand photos), edition and quality printing are possible on the most basic of home computers/printers sold today. There’s also the instantaneous transition between the “click” and seeing the results (and if you got it wrong, having the possibility of being able to repeat the same photo with the right settings), and the amazing fact that with each image file, all the settings (speed, aperture, white balance, ISO, etc.) are recorded digitally with the photo. Being your own teacher has become so many orders of magnitude easier.
For me, photography has many functions:
- Helps us preserve memories - who doesn’t like to see the pictures of our parents and grandparents before we were born, with the different fashions, cars, houses, everything!
- Brings to our eyes what is far away, be it someone in your family or some faraway exotic land.
- Makes it possible with long exposures and high speed photography to see what is too dark, slow, bright, or fast.
- It sells! It creates the allure for all kind of products, even before you see them with your own eyes.
- And last but not least, it can have artistic intentions, either by creating certain aesthetics, or by capturing and transmitting emotions.
These are all the reasons why I like to be an apprentice of photography, I hope you enjoy the results!
