Humanity Photo Awards (HPA) is an international competition, aiming to call upon photographers all over the world to widely and deeply record and preserve the heritage of the folk culture. HPA finds a way for photography to ally with folklore, anthropology and sociology and its photo series provide the most systemic specimens and trustworthy evidence for cultural heritage, which is far beyond artistic value.

Since 1998, photographers from 108 countries have joined HPA for recording, spreading and sharing culture diversity since its establishment. HPA has grown up to be a notable culture brand and captured so many cultural scenes from more than a half countries of the world, providing a big world folklore photo museum for human beings.

In 2005, the best works of the HPA were exhibited at the UN Pavilion of the World Expo in Aichi, Japan and UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, France. In 2010, HPA again was invited to join UNESCO Week at Expo Shanghai.

“The Humanity Photo Awards represent an undertaking that aims a more profound mutual understanding and interaction across cultural, geographical and political frontiers. HPA allows us to reflect on human activities by people in all continents and involving all age groups, HPA will allow us to get to know each other better, and above all HPA highlights and advocates strongly the value of our common humanity in diversity.” said by Hans d’Orville, Deputy Director-General a.i. and Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning in the forewords of Memory of Mankind IV.

HPA is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and China Folklore Photographic Association (CFPA). UNESCO’s mission is to build peace in the minds of people through education, sciences, culture, communication and information. Meanwhile, peace is a conscious activity which is based on difference-respecting and dialogues. CFPA is the only photographic association in the world who enjoys full operational relations with UNESCO. For the past 17 years, CFPA has gathered almost 40,000 members who have become an important force in exploring, rescuing, documenting and preserving Chinese cultural heritage.
