It's always interesting - and sometimes also a bit funny and bizarre - to read other people "testimonials" or analysis of my photos, or specially me as a person based on my Flickr photostream.

All I can say is, that don't believe everything, what my friends wrote on the right column of this profile page. Only one of my testimonial writers has met me personally - and that happened after he wrote his text.

------
A little bit about me. I have been an amateur photographer since 1976 - and back in 80's a part-time semi-pro, too earning some money for my university studies. But now, photography is just a hobby.

I'm still using traditional b&w 35mm films, which I develop myself and scan with my Nikon Coolscan film scanner. Doing it like that is fun, because I can use old and modern technics together. I don't manipulate my shots in PS or other software, only dust and major scratch on film surface are removed with Gimp clone tool. So, basically my shots are straight scans with Vuescan software from filmscanner.

Most of my camera gear consist manual focus 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras from 1950's to 1990's or early 2000's. Nothing special or valuable just "old junk".

Some of my sets contains my older photos from late 1970's and early 1980's, but mostly they include my current photos from 2006 - 2008.

    Pan ---- シリル says:

"I discovered the photography of Jari through the set "Farmers". It reminded me the work of one of my favorite photographer Romualdas Rakauskas from Lithuania. If you look at the Farmers' pictures attentively you'll feel a lot of respect for the people that he had shot. These pictures are authentic documents and, by their qualities, are universal. Lucky i'm ! Jari sent me a print of this set. Authentic, I think this is the right word for the definition of Jari's photostream. In any of his pics you'll never see attempt to transform the true scene by using digital tools like you see so much on Flickr....
If I remember well Jari became my first contact on Flickr and since he has always been a source of inspiration, ideas. He has always been helpful and generous and he's still always ready to share !
    Thank you Jari !"

    T&T and Mr B says:

"This is the beauty of Flickr. You get to know other photographers and even though you have never met, there is a connection.
I am a great fan of Jari's pictures. He is a "Nordic" person and as such his take is subtle and friendly. In the Nordic countries we dont dont scream and rant, but persevere and get our point across.
Jari is also one of those rare shooters that inspires you to take more pictures yourself. You look at his images and take the camera in hand and go out and shoot. Not to copy him as he has a "specific" Jari look to his pictures, but just to see what you yourself can do,
Of course, he is deadly dangerous with his cake and pastry pictures. Most everything available in Finland or Sweden is available here in Western Canada, but we do not have "Konditori" culture. This is not Starbuck or any other fancy coffeeshop. A Konditori is a place were you go for coffee, cake and peace and quiet. You contemplate what to have with your coffee, knowing full well that if it looks like whipped cream, thats what it is and if it has berries on it, they are fresh. I look at Jari's pictures and feel nostalgic for this. It is low-key and looks deceptively simple - it is not. This is serious business and to capture it on film is just as serious! Jari is one of the few "cake" shooters that will make you gain weight just by looking at them - and you dont mind!
He is also subversive and cloaks these pictures under the label "testing" lenses and developers!
One day we hope to sit down with Jari at one of the Konditori's he frequents and go through the selection process "vanilla sauce, whipped cream, cloudberries". - In the meantime I look at his pictures and am transported to this peaceful environment.
    Keep shooting Jari!

    mfogiel says:

"Jari is a very shy photographer. You will see manless landscapes, town scenes or tabletop shots dominate his photostream, with an occasional portrait of a friend or a member of his family ( persons who have clearly agreed to be photographed).
He is shy to the point, that he shoots his lenses at the widest aperture most of the time, as if he was afraid to include too much of the reality in a bitingly sharp manner. He prefers to be discreet even when taking photographs of a lake, or a row of birch trees. His subjects most of the time are simple and elegant, just like the design of Aalto or Wirkkala. Only at times, when he feels safe to be unnoticed in the near darkness, he dares to shoot more emotional scenes of human activity.
His fondness of good cakes and fine coffee (plus some wine on occasions) deliver a steady stream of elegant photographs which are a homage to the good things in life, and bring to my mind the exquisite film "Babette's Feast". I think, that deep in hiding, Jari is a mediterranean soul thrown among the thousand and one lake of the Finnish land, and this will surely result in a persistent flow of intriguing images in the furure..."

    Dr Karanka says:

"His style is simple but exquisite. The only way I can fully explain how jsuominen shoots is by comparing him with my own pictures. Where I am blacks and blown whites, he's a scale of grays. Where I have thick grain in a face, he will have the tones of the skin. Where I have overexposed skies, he will have clouds. Where I have a big theme in your face, he will have a daily Rauma scene. Where I have people occluding people and a visual mess, he will have a cat. The simplicity and delicacy of his photos is easy to miss at first, but with time, grows due to it's scarcity. Nobody else shoots this in flickr, even if due to it's natural look it may not pop out at first.

The last thing to know about jsuominen is that he's a film/developer freak. This may sound good or bad to you, but at least interesting. I mean, he's an useful resource to keep your eye on! I would never have the patience to shoot the same scene even twice with different films..."

    Jim O'Connell says:

"The greatest thing a photographer can accomplish is to make you feel what he felt when he pushed the shutter release.

    Jari does this.

He has a gentle, patient style and a careful eye. I always look forward to his new pictures."

    Fotohuis (Robert) says:

"Very busy and serious about a lot of aspects within the photography. His photos are made of normal daily subjects, al lot in his direct environment and telling the viewer a story sometimes in a serie. Very subtle style and way of photography and his technical knowledge of photography is making it a pleasure to enjoy his photos."

    Modular says:

"I like that subtle photo style you have, photos that don't seem to shout at the viewer, that work best as series. Those are exactly the kind of pictures that I love to see on flickr, it's like being guided through a foreign area by a local outside the typical tourist spots."
