THE 'CAPTURING OUR WAYLAND HERITAGE' PROJECT

* It was a three year community project Jan 2009 to end Dec 2011, centered on the market town of Watton and the surrounding parishes, which aimed to explore, record and celebrate Wayland’s unique cultural and landscape heritage.

* The project worked with local schools and history groups, providing support, activities and training. It help set up new interest groups in the area.

* Topics explored included: landscape history, archaeology, myths, buildings, oral & family history, trades, crafts, fairs, sport, traditions, farming, ‘Battle Area’, airfields, transport, religion, food and fashion.

* ‘Capturing our Wayland Heritage’ helped the community to produce books and data DVDs on Watton and 12 of the surrounding villages, that will be a legacy for generations to come. The books are available from Wayland House, High Street, Watton, Norfolk for £8. The money is going to fund reprinting the books and £2 of each sale will go to support a new Wayland Heritage group that will be formed in early 2012.

It has been a great privllege to have worked as Wayland Heritage Officer with the Wayland Community, the Wayland Partnership and be supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the last 3 years. I am looking forward to playing an active part in the new Wayland Heritage group in 2012.
