I am as interested in words as in images and accordingly tend to take a very 'writerly' perspective to photography, seeing a photograph as a single moment with a larger narrative. My favourite photographers include Eugene Atget, Frank Meadows Sutcliffe, Benjamin Brecknell Turner, Josef Sudek, Karel Brassai, Plicka and Simon Marsden, the drawings of Escher, Dore, Meryon and Piranesi, the paintings of David Friedrich and Atkinson Grimshaw or the cinematography of films like Metropolis and The Third Man.

    Bill in DC says:

"There is no greater historian on Flickr than Richard. He posts outstanding images of historical places, accompanying each with a carefully-researched note relating to the photograph's subject. The images themselves are outstanding as well, framed to show off the essence of the subject. Richard's photographs fill a much-needed and rather underappreciated niche in the Flickr community."

    Maia C says:

"Richard has the most wonderful photos of the most interesting places. If I can't visit all those places myself, at least I can enjoy them vicariously through Richard's photos."

    Martin Beek says:

"Richard's photographs are packed with stories. I was very drawn to them possibly because of his architectural work. He makes looking at buildings a real joy, the way I think it should be. There's constant delight in new discoveries, drifting through his photostream is rather like browsing through a pictorial encyclopedia. Some of his London pictures are among the best on their subject in my opinion, they are also backed up by interesting footnotes and comments. I'm always excited to see where he'll take us next."

    Skinnyde says:

"A master chronicler of architecture. Visiting Richard’s photostream is an education. I have learnt much from his informative descriptions of the many buildings he has photographed.

He seems to belong to every group associated with buildings, and rightly so. His photos and words deserve as wide an audience as possible.

Richard also likes Dr Who, which is no bad thing since my days of hiding behind the sofa whilst it is on are over. Honest!"
