I'm spending a few years in Seattle with my mate Hugh, our kitty and our cameras. I was born in Seattle before moving to Europe as a kid. We've been San Francisco Bay Area and California people for the past 20+ years.
I love photographing wild things . . . and urban things . . . both the ordinary and the magnificent . . . the visions and experiences that paint my world.
I write and research for a living, and volunteer at a wildlife hospital on the side. I've always worked with animals in some form, so they appear as frequent subjects in my photo stream and form my creative narrative.
Wildlife Photography Ethics
I do my best to abide by wildlife photography ethics. The well-being of my wildlife subjects is more important to me than any image.
I shoot with a 600mm equivalent lens (4/3 system). I do not bait or lure wild animals, or otherwise stage photos. I will sometimes photograph near an existing bird feeder, and if I do, I will always mention this in the photo description. I rarely photograph captive animals, but once in a while, I'll take a few shots in a sanctuary or wildlife rehabilitation facility. I will also mention this in the description.

IN SUPPORT OF A WILDLIFE WATCHERS' REFUGE STAMP

I've written about this issue in detail at my blog: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. I strongly support efforts toward a non-hunting Wildlife Watchers' Stamp for our National Refuge System -- a non-hunters' alternative to the Federal Duck Stamp.
These posts, in turn, inspired a few more discussions at other blogs, on the issue of alternative funding streams.
The gist of it is: Wildlife watchers number 71+ million in the United States, we spend $44 billion or more on wildlife viewing activities. We hold a lot of potential economic power that could fund our consistently under-funded wild lands. Implementing a Wildlife Watchers' revenue stream could also give all of us photographers, birders and other non-hunting visitors at refuges, a greater voice in decisions about public land and wildlife issues. So far, that potential is largely untapped.
My husband and I made up this "calling card" template to use whenever we are patronizing local businesses because of our photography or wildlife watching activities. We feel it's important to let people know just how much we bring into the community and thus raise awareness for how much our wildlife and our refuges benefit everyone across the board.
Feel free to use this template if you'd like to do the same. Clicking the image above will give you a multi-card printing template (PDF). Email me for a Photoshop PSD template with a separate text layer if you like the graphic but want to change the text.
Thanks very much for stopping by! [[:-)
