Bio
Art Fernandez, a native of Carmel, California, has been photographing since 1978. His interest in photography was sparked at the age of four by the gift of a camera from his father. Over time this interest opened doors to creativity and enabled Art to play with mood and lighting. At first with small cameras, he experimented with local scenes of Point Lobos, Pebble Beach, and other non-descript moments.

While attending Humboldt State University in Northern California, his interest in photography became more serious. By the age of 20, he had moved to large format cameras and alternative photographic techniques. It was at this time that Art began to photograph almost exclusively in black and white.

Art has traveled extensively throughout the Western United States finding the unique in the otherwise ordinary. His subjects range from architecture, industrial, landscape, and long duration photography.

Art's work has been featured in national publications and has been selected for use by the National Park Service.

Artist's Statement
I've been photographing since I was four, studied in the classic analog photographic techniques, and made the leap to digital when the first digital cameras shipped.

Throughout my school years, I either had a camera in hand or took every fine art photography course I could get away with taking. I have a passion for alternative photography (making my own film, pinhole cameras, shooting with Holgas) and also medium and instant photography.

Today, I have largely turned my back on Digital Photography in favor of film and large format cameras for everything except color. I believe there is a place for all types of mediums in this art. Style wise, I am more of a nature photographer that also has an appreciation with street scenes and urban/industrial subjects.
