I like to think of myself as a complex simpleton. My wife says I’m simply an “Arsch mit Ohren.” Guess I can’t exactly deny that last characterization since I’ve done lots to earn the title!

The original idea behind joining Flickr was to share photos with family and friends located across the U.S. and in Berlin. It seemed more logical than sending periodic e-mails loaded with large jpeg files.

What I didn’t anticipate but am happy to have discovered is that folks from all over the world have also enjoyed a variety of my photos. In the process I’ve developed a number of Flickr friends or contacts.

As for my status as photographer, I think of myself more of a hobbyist and opportunist than anything. I enjoy capturing moments in the lives of family and friends, images of Mother Nature and the creatures that inhabit this great planet along with us. I’m also into airplanes.

I’m a Nikon guy and my basic equipment includes the following:
D50
D7000
35mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.4
60mm f/2.8
24-85mm f/2.8-4.0
70-200mm f/2.8 VRII
70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VRII
Speedlight SB-600

Of course, I also have a tripod and am not afraid to use it!

As for software, I use Photoshop CS3 Extended with a variety of filters, to include NeatImage for controlling noise.

"Ah, Bob Butcher... What a joy! His stunning photographs of Alaskan landscapes reveal his obvious pride and love for the state he calls home. His collection of airplanes reveal his passion for flying machines and an almost boy-like wonder for the marvel of flight. And his photos of family and pets show a heart full of pride and love for those closest to him. As if that weren't enough, his riotous sense of humor is an absolute pleasure. I look forward to Bob's comments because they always leave me smiling, whether from praise or from sheer, unabashed humor. Often, I'm laughing out loud and thinking of a worthy reply... one that can elicit as much laughter from him as he elicits from me...

    Thank you, Bob - you're a treasure!"

"This testimonial is perhaps overdue, seeing as how we've been Flickr contacts for over a year now. Bob is an excellent photographer, capturing moments from his family life, the amazing scenery of Alaska, and of course, his beloved planes. I love checking in on his photostream for glimpses into his fantastic array of pictures ranging from his cute cat and dog to his wife and kids to mountains or to just interesting photographs!

The other great thing about Bob is his encouragement and critiques. He almost always makes the effort to post something on my pictures. Even though I am not the greatest photographer, his comments inspire me to higher levels (or they just make me laugh my head off). Thanks for being a great Flickr contact, Bob!"

"Bob’s photos capture all the beauty and wonder that Alaska has offer, from the moon high above the mountains at night to the winter sunsets that seem to make the Alaskan sky glow. He also has magnificent captures of Alaska’s diverse wildlife including Moose, Elk, and Eagles. Finally, Bob’s passion for aviation can definitely seen in his numerous photographs of planes both military and civilian.

On a more personal level, Bob was the first individual to greet and comment on my photographs when I joined flickr several months ago. Since then he’s continued to give me encouragement and criticism whenever possible. I truly believe that anyone who has this man on their contacts can truly benefit from the knowledge and wisdom he’s gained over the years with a camera. Thanks for everything Bob!"

"Bob was the first person to greet and comment on my photos when I joined Flickr and posts a large amount of pictures here. He has a passion for Aircraft, from what I can tell by all his plane related shots, and is getting quite good at it. Thanx to Bob for being a friend and look forward to seeing your pictures as they come up. :)

"Bob has a great bunch of photos and has always had lots of encouraging comments on my photos.

I am from Fairbanks, Bob from Anchorage. If you live in Alaska, you understand that Fairbanks has an ordinance that doesn't allow us back into town if we are found saying something nice about Anchorage. So that makes my appreciation of his photos that much more impressive.

Go back frequently, he always has a few of the nice parts of Alaska that are near to Anchor Town (hey I gotta say something not nice!)."
