I’m a photographer and psychologist specializing in what I call “photographic psychology.” It’s the study of how people create, share, and react to images – especially concerning digital photography, images that portray psychological issues, and online photosharing.

If you’re interested in these topics, I have sets devoted to them, as well as an online book entitled Photographic Psychology: Image and Psyche

I love to discuss photographs, including capturing and post-processing techniques, composition, and the fascinating psychological meanings and emotions embedded in photos. Some psychologists call this “photo analysis,” which sounds rather harsh and critical. I prefer to think of it as offering my impressions of an image in terms of the feelings and ideas I sense in it based on how it was captured and processed.

If you’re interested in my giving you this kind of feedback about your photography, talk to me about my photos! Pick out any image in my photostream and let me know what your reactions are to it. But I have to be honest with you; I might not reciprocate if you just give me a one-liner comment, like how you’re fond of the colors, composition, or whatever. Instead, you might want to respond to these kinds of questions:

- What thoughts and feelings immediately come to mind?

- What does this image remind you of?

- If you could go into this picture, what would you say and do?

- What would you change about the image, or what’s happening in it?

- What message might this picture be giving you?

- If you gave a title to this image, to capture what it means to you, what would it be?

Those are the kinds of things I would talk about when commenting on your photos, in addition to stuff about composition, how the image was captured, and post-processing techniques. If you have ideas about those things concerning my images, I welcome your comments!

Oh, one other thing. Sometimes I leave a fav (but no comment) on a photo by someone whom I don’t really know in flickr. That’s my invitation to talk with you.

"John is one of my most loyal flickr friends, whose comments range from light and funny to deep and insightful, yet always show that his contributions are made with great care and attention.

The same holds true for his photography, or should I say imagery, which is performed and processed with attention and purpose, and often accompanied with an essay linking his knowledge about psychology, as applied to online and offline life, to the images.

There is much to see, read, interact, and enjoy in this stream. Take a dive, swim around, and take your time. Many a gem can be found."

"John is, first of all, an extremely intelligent and very, very friendly man. He is also an incredibly gifted photographer; his photo's are often daring and subtle at the same time -- they ask questions, they make you think, laugh, reflect, ponder, smile. He finds true things in your photo's that you never imagined. His insight is remarkable; his kindness and generosity even more so. His stream is never a 'quick look' -- one has to inhabit his images for a bit. It's well worth the time. You always discover something new, something remarkable in even the ordinary. Part Zen Master, part mystic, part jester, John is above all a good and thoughtful man. His presence on flickr is like a lighthouse, or a windmill -- even though windmill's do not give off light. Oh, bother. You should get the point by now. Or not. But you won't regret the journey. Not here!"

    Rick Howe says:

"John's comment, "For me, photography, like all the visual arts, is learning to see," rings so true, and his pictures certainly illustrate how much he has learned. John's statement reminds me of something I heard a photographer say when his young son asked him what "to observe" means: "It means 'to learn,' " he replied."

Peter you've lost the news says:

"There’s never a dull moment in John’s photo collection,

Two things that make John a great contributor to Flickr :-

For one thing, he produces fantastic photos. They are always technically excellent, but far more interesting than their technical side is their content. They make you think at all sorts of different levels and always provoke interesting debate among the viewers.

And secondly, John makes really interesting observations and comments on other peoples’ work. His comments are always helpful, insightful, encouraging and well worth the read.

John is extremely adept at image manipulation too – among other things his multiple self shots are really worth checking out."
