The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) is one of five Department of Defense (DoD) regional centers for security studies, and one of the three that are integral components of the National Defense University (NDU).

The Africa Center has built a comprehensive program of seminars, symposia, conferences, research, and outreach activities designed to promote good governance and democratic values in the African defense and security sectors.

Africa Center events unite senior African, European, and American military officers, civilian officials, elected officials, private citizens, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations in activities designed to generate critical thinking about Africa’s security challenges.

In particular, the ACSS offers the only continent-wide, apolitical forum to examine several broad areas, including civil-military relations, security studies, defense economics, and conflict studies, among others. As events in Africa place new stresses on African leaders, these Center seminars, activities, and events develop important networks among African, American, and international military and civilian professionals who are then better equipped to confront challenges to the continent’s peace and stability.

The Africa Center also works to maintain long-term, continuing interaction with and among its participants on matters relevant to the ACSS mission. Through Africa Center Community programs, the internet, and in-country contacts; developing a network of civilian and military defense professionals who can work together is a key Center goal.

The Africa Center is the pre-eminent Department of Defense institution for strategic security studies, research, and outreach in Africa. The Africa Center engages African partner states and institutions through rigorous academic and outreach programs that build strategic capacity and foster long-term, collaborative relationships.

The Africa Center Vision:

The Africa Center for Strategic Studies supports United States foreign and security policies by strengthening the strategic capacity of African states to identify and resolve security challenges in ways that promote civil-military cooperation, respect for democratic values, and safeguard human rights.
