Zig More!

I'm a freelance graphic designer, art director, illustrator, idea generator, classical type advocate, cat sofa, analogue synth enthusiast, wordsmith and beyond! In my arts and crafts studio located in the Toronto Junction, I sling together designs for web and print, I work on type, branding, concepting for ads, copywriting, illustrating; well I get to wear a lot of hats, which is like cross training for the brain!

In my design work, I like to adhere to Classical typographic sensibilities, while also borrowing from the insights made by Modernist thinking, regarding form and function. Content does matter and context is everything!

However, I feel the unadorned, "neutral" type has become an aesthetic onto itself. I'm a big proponent of CONTRAST, and feel that by delving into the past and carrying on classic traditions that have had a thrust in time going back some 450 years compared to the more recent Modern dabblings, well serifs just look startling and refreshing against a wall of Helvetica type.

I still break out the rulers and grids and keep things clean, but I like exploring idosyncratic typefaces to create hierarchies and love typograhical contrast. The approriate pairing of fonts creates that magical third, whereby, 1 + 1 = 3 !

I also think the past is an undiscovered country, and the era between 1870 and 1890 which routinely gets critically panned, contains some real gems and ideas that have been lost in time.

Break out the swash sans capitals!
