Uphill Industries is a one-woman operation run by Miya Hirabayashi. I'm a California native who moved to New York to seek my fortune in education policy. Fortunately, I came to my senses after being commissioned by many friends to design invitations for various weddings and parties, and here I am.
Uphill's name comes from the oft-heard adage "When I was your age, we used to walk barefoot uphill in the snow both ways, and we liked it." I'm drawn to design that retains some of the designer's hand. When I'm working, I try to evoke the sensibilities of someone who would not hesitate to tell me about their barefoot travels to school.
I strongly believe in social justice and community development; I give at least five percent of my profits to charity, and offer pro bono design services to non-profits. If you are a non-profit organization that is interested in receiving pro bono design services or a percentage of my profits, please email me.
Until March 31, five percent of my profits will be given to Partners in Health's relief efforts in Haiti. To find out more about their phenomenal work, please visit their website.
When not sitting in front of the computer, I can be found sewing, sketching, cooking, knitting, taking photos, singing rousing renditions of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," or walking my dog and daughter through Central Park.
