The Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums was founded in 1977 by a group of volunteers from the Art Gallery of Ontario with Diana Goad elected as the first President. Eleven art galleries and eight museums became its first members.

From its beginning, CFFM was committed to promoting museums and Canadian heritage, educating Canadians about the value of museums, encouraging volunteer participation in the museum community and facilitating cooperation and communication among individuals, museums and related organizations.

Now CFFM is a forum for an estimated 200,000 Museum Volunteers across Canada. Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean is the fifth Governor General to become the Patron of CFFM. Fourteen board directors from across Canada and an Advisory Council of six oversee CFFM’s operations.

“Au courant” is the name of the quarterly newsletter, published in both official languages, which reports on Members’ activities and fund-raising projects.
