I take too many pictures. I try to add a few now and again. I have quite a backlog.
My interests are reflected in my photography and my photographs lead me to learn more about what I photograph. I photograph things mundane like a piece of construction equipment, an old house, or a factory. I enjoy photographing the natural world, anything from landscapes to insects and all things in between. My photographs help me learn about history, architecture, ecology, and earth science. I often include scientific names, scientific descriptions, and historical descriptions in my captions. That's because I'm a scientist, professionally a geologist, with a keen interest in natural history. I also love architecture and history. In my captions, you'll find some related information of things I know and things I've learned. Photography helps me learn about things, how things work in the natural world and the human world, and how humans and nature interact.
I generally photograph real things and people, sometimes a bit "commercial." I don't do anything too artsy or manipulative but I really appreciate some of the fine and sometimes thought-provoking photographic art that many of my contacts do. I strive for good composition and technique. I endeavor to learn more about photography. I work on the art of photography if I see something striking or pleasing to the eye. Every once in awhile I get lucky with a good photograph that gets good reviews from other flickrites.
The great thing about flickr is the flickr people and my contacts. I have contacts from other parts of the United States and the world. I enjoy seeing how my contacts interpret their world. I learn quite a lot from that. Some of my contacts are from countries whose governments have political and ideaological differences with the government of my country. But on flickr, we are all people with common interests.

I'm not the world's greatest photographer but I do get flattering requests for use of my photos. I really appreciate any requests for the use of my photos. I'm very accommodating when it comes to noncommercial/nonprofit uses, educational uses, and even for your blog or social networking site. Just please ask.
Please contact me. I sincerely welcome your requests.

"Stones is the most awesome geologist on the planet... even though he is the only one I know. He's from SoCal, the rockin'est place on the planet, so you know he knows his stones."
