I am a proud Vancouver resident having lived here my entire life. I love the outdoors, and especially being high up in the mountains of beautiful British Columbia. The higher, the better. There is something freeing about mountain tops that make me come alive.

Pyramid Mountain by GlacierTim

During the summer, there is nothing better for me than to ride ATVs with my family as high up a mountain as possible, and then hike the rest of the way to the top. During the winter, I get there by snowmobile. I have been "sledding" in many locations throughout BC and Washington, but my favourite location by far is the Pemberton Icecap in Whistler. This glacier is so massive, so stunning, and so awe inspiring that it is beyond words. Even my photos don't capture the size and gandeur of this magical yet dangerous place. One can ride for the entire day on the iceap and only see 20% of it.

And speaking of danger, the mountains are always an inherently risky place to be and deserve our complete repect. During a 2008 trip in Revelstoke, our party was struck by an avalanche. The spot where I was located when the slide began was almost instantly covered by 15 feet of heavy snow, and I escaped with only about two seconds to spare before being buried. Tragically, one member of our group was buried under his machine at a depth of eight feet. Despite the frantic efforts of 12 people equipped with avalanche probes, beacons and shovels, we couldn't get him out fast enough and he died. This incident and the lessons I learned live with me every day.

Frantic Digging by GlacierTim

I find photography to be both an art and a science. It is a bit like golf because one can never be the best - there will always be many others who are better. I recognize that I will never truly arrive at the destination of being a photographer, but I am enjoying the challenge of the journey while learning along the way.

I am a loyal follower of the Strobist photostream. My photographer hero is Joe McNally.

I just wish I could take pictures for my day job...
