There's an interesting quote from David Lynch's movie, 'Lost Highway,' where the police, interviewing Bill Pullman about a potential crime, ask if he has a video camera. His wife dismissed their question, saying, no, Bill hates video cameras-- a statement the cops find rather odd. Hates video cameras?

"I want to remember it the way I remember it in my mind," Pullman explains, "not necessarily the way it really happened."

Not necessarily the way it really happened.

I could have said that. In a sense, I am Bill Pullman. I take photos because each moment is fleeting and, without some sort of reminder, is about to fade away forever. For me, nothing's authentic until I've captured it somehow. Not so I can have it, but so it can be remembered, in my own way.

To me, memory is a choice. My photos invoke how I felt about someone, a situation, or a thing, much the same way that Magritte's famous "Ceci ne pas une pipe" means, literally, THESE ARE NOT PHOTOS. They are not accurate depictions of real events. This is not journalism. What you see here are private moments and memories, remembered as I thought--or wished--they happened.

For all of us, memory is more authentic and more ideal than what actually happened. The shutter snaps-- but the subjective act of remembering continues. That's why I hate video cameras-- they record, but they can't remember.

Thanks. Oh. And if you see anything in my stream you don't like or don't approve of, remember this:

"If you dare condemn my life it will come after you with a sharpened rake."

"CatsFive's photos are about as real as it gets, but at the same time, surreal. Take an ordinary situation and enhance it with the sharpness and lucidity that comes with hallucinogens, and you've just experienced a CatsFive photo."
