I have been making photographs since 1967, when the University of Minnesota School of Journalism lent me a camera, and my wife and I went to Mississippi for the summer to record, photograph, and interview traditional blues musicians - recording bluesmen an activity I had been involved in already for six years at the time.. This trip resulted in my first book, BLOW MY BLUES AWAY. For several years in the late 1960's, I was a reporter and photographer in Columbus, Georgia. During that time, I produced my second book, I"M SOMEBODY IMPORTANT. I then decided to become a photography teacher, and have taught photography on the high school level for a total of 24 years. I have also authored five more books of photographs and interviews. And, too, for a number of years, worked as a folklorist recording old-time musicians- and producing concerts and festivals where they performed. I recently retired as the photography teacher at Paideia School in Atlanta, and continue to photograph for exhibition and publication. And, as you may be able to see from my profile picture, a professional oil-can bass player; I learned from the master, Will Shade, head of the Memphis Jug Band, and try to carry on his tradition.
