Er hatte Angst, daß sein Sohn über das unnormale Privileg nachdenken sollte und so oder so entdecken würde, das er einfach nur ein Trugbild war. Kein Mann zu sein, sondern die Projektion des Traumes eines anderen Menschen:
Welch’ unvergleichliche Demütigung, welch’ Schwindel!
Jeder Vater hat Interesse an den Söhnen, die er gezeugt hat (die er zugelassen hat) in einem Zustand von Verwirrung oder Glück; es ist natürlich, daß der Zauberer sich ängstigt vor der Zukunft des Sohnes, den er sich Eingeweide für Eingeweide und Gesichtszug für Gesichtszug ausgedacht hat, in tausendundeiner geheimnisvollen Nacht.

Hij was bang dat zijn zoon zou nadenken over dat ongewone privilege en op een of andere manier zou ontdekken dat hij alleen maar een schijnbeeld was. Geen mens zijn, de projectie van de droom van een ander mens zijn: wat een onvergelijkbare vernedering, wat een kwelling! Elke vader stelt belang in de zonen die hij heeft voortgebracht (die hij heeft toegelaten) op een ogenblik van louter verwarring of geluk; het is heel natuurlijk dat de magiër vreesde voor de toekomst van die zoon, die hij ingewand na ingewand en trekje voor trekje had uitgedacht, in duizendenéén nachten.
