As the first institution of higher learning in Mississippi to earn a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Millsaps College is known for its academic strength, spirit of community service and national-caliber faculty. Millsaps embraces the whole student, provides many international study opportunities and builds principled leaders and accomplished citizens.
With a belltower overlooking the campus and the heart of Jackson, Mississippi Millsaps College occupies 100 acres in the center of the city near its medical district, the trendy Fondren shopping area and the beloved Belhaven neighborhood. Founded in 1890 the college is consistently recognized as one of the country’s best private colleges dedicated to undergraduate teaching and educating the whole individual. As a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Millsaps is home to 1,200 students from 33 states and 18 countries.
With an average class size of 15, Millsaps is a place where intimate learning and creative expression are encouraged and supported by every facet of a student’s education. Millsaps offers 33 majors and 34 minors, with the option of a self-designed major, along with multiple study abroad opportunities. The Else School of Management offers both master’s of business administration and mater’s of accountancy degrees.
The college’s student-centered approach to education is expressed in distinctive programs including the Faith and Work Initiative, which encourages students to find fulfilling careers through internships with Jackson businesses and nonprofit organizations; Living in Yucatan Program, which allows students to study at the college’s 4,000-acre biocultural reserve in Mexico; and internship opportunities at organizations such as NASA, Nike, the FBI and Sotheby’s. In addition, the college’s medical mentoring program pairs pre-med students with local physicians to guarantee clinical experience—one reason why Millsaps students are accepted to medical school at a rate well above the national average.
On campus, Millsaps students join a close-knit community with opportunities to become involved in over 85 clubs and organizations. The college offers 18 men’s and women’s NCAA Division III athletic teams. Millsaps will become be the first college or university in Mississippi to add lacrosse as a conference-affiliated intercollegiate sport in the 2010-11 school year.
Millsaps was selected as one of only 40 colleges featured in Loren Pope’s Colleges That Change Lives. “The able and enthusiastic faculty has national rather than regional roots. Its members not only earned their academic spurs in the nation’s top universities but have also taught in them. But they prefer to teach at Millsaps, a conviction that comes through loud and clear in just about everything they say…Every college has dissatisfied students and those who should be there,” writes Pope, “but I didn’t run into any at Millsaps.”
