Until March 2011 all my shots were taken with a Canon Powershot S3 IS ~ which some call a P&S, though technically it is a 'bridge' camera. It's like a DSLR without the interchangeable lenses or the high quality sensor!
It has a lot of functionality and I shot on full manual 90% of the time.
Finally in March I was able to purchase my first DSLR. I now shoot with a Nikon D5000 (with kit lenses 18-55 & 55-200 VR) ~ and I was able to dive straight into manual mode, or occasionally semi-auto if I need shots quickly! I'm having so much fun!! :)
