*** About the history of Le Havre (the haven) ***

Due to the silting-up of the ports of Harfleur (north bank) and Honfleur (south bank) a new port was founded in October 1517 by King Francis 1st. A year later the first ships call in the new port.

Built on swampy lands, the draining of the area was achieved by the Dutch, as they were already renowned for their experience.

The new city was called “Franciscopolis” after the king’s name, it was later changed to “Le Havre de Grâce” and then shortened to “Le Havre” during the French Revolution. Already at that time, the port was the second largest in France.

*** About the Port of Le Havre ***

- The leading French worldport for foreign trade
- The leading French worldport for container traffic with nearly 2,50 million TEU in 2008, or more than 60% of all the containers handled in French worldports
- 40% of all French crude oil passes through Le Havre
- 5th largest worldport in Europe, nearly 80.5 million tons of cargo each year
- worldport calls by 6,180 ships in 2006

Le Havre was the first port in France to welcome container carriers and the first ship was the "Container Despacher" on 25th November 1966.

Nes’ Photographie  (Very Busy...) says:
